DIY Cleaning

Performing the Preventive Maintenance on your Personal Computer.

The three major elements of a personal computer will be serviced. The Keyboard, Central Processing Unit (CPU) and Monitor. The process for the PM/Cleaning on these elements are as follows:

The Keyboard

  1. Properly shut down your computer and unplug.

  2. Disconnect the keyboard cable from the CPU.

  3. Using a vacuum (with the brush attachment) in conjunction with compressed canned air dislodge the remaining contaminates. Larger contaminates can be removed by removing one or more keycaps.

  4. Clean the keys by applying a light mist of CleanPC Professional Keyboard Cleaner foaming action computer cleaner directly to the keypad.

  5. For a deep cleaning use a small scrub brush to lightly scrub keys before wiping clean with a lint Free cloth. On extremely soiled areas, allow CleanPC Professional Keyboard Cleaner to remain for a few seconds before wiping.

  6. Using a lint free cloth wipe off the device.

  7. Blow-dry the keyboard with compressed canned air.

  8. Re-examine keyboard, finishing touches may be needed.

  9. Set the keyboard aside until the remaining components are completed.

Central Processing Unit CPU (Or the BOX)

This is the most sensitive part of the computer. It is best to try to clean the unit where it sits, but if this is not possible move the unit to the closest area convenient work area. Caution, if cables are needed to be removed pay close attention to where each cable resides, if necessary, mark each cable with a label.

  1. Remove the cover from the CPU by removing screws which are usually located along the rear of the case and/or along each side. When removing the cover be alert for any wires or cables which might be caught up inside the cover it may become snagged when the cover is being removed. Place cover aside to be cleaned later.

  2. Use the vacuum first to remove most of the larger contaminates, this will minimizes the amount of dust that will become airborne during the next step.

  3. After as much debris as possible has been removed start to assist the vacuum by dislodging the remaining contaminates with the compressed canned air until all contaminates are removed. Pay close attention to Power supply, CD Drive and Floppy Disk areas.

  4. CleanPC Professional Keyboard Cleaner can be used on the cover. Wipe dry with a lint free cloth.
    Note: Canned compressed air can be useful in removing debris from the grill vents.

  5. Replace the CPU cover, connect the cables and reposition the CPU.

The Monitor

  1. Turn the monitor "OFF".

  2. Remove excessive dust build-up with a vacuum using the brush attachment. Pay chose attention to the vented areas.

  3. Clean the plastic exterior of the monitor with CleanPC Professional Keyboard Cleaner. Spray a fine mist to one side of the monitor at a time, wipe with a clean lint free cloth.

    TIP: When cleaning the monitor it is best to start with the underside first. This is done by flipping the monitor upside down, so that the monitor stand is facing the ceiling.

    TIP: Most monitor stands are detachable, remove stand from the monitor, this will make it much easier to clean both the monitor and the stand.

  4. Re-attach Monitor stand to monitor and/or return monitor to original position.

  5. Clean the Monitor screen using an Anti-glare screen cleaner.
